Ban police presence on Roosevelt University’s campus

Ban police presence on Roosevelt University’s campus
Why this petition matters
Roosevelt University should ban police from coming to all events. While this would be the ideal outcome, it is especially important that the university prohibits police from attending any events related to domestic violence. For the past couple of years, the multicultural student support services department has allowed police to distribute pamphlets regarding domestic violence resources during domestic violence awareness month. Though this may seem appropriate to some, there are critical details that must be considered. Research has found that police officers commit acts of domestic violence between two-to-four times more frequently than the general American population, on average. Furthermore, an ABC-7 investigation from 2017 found that a staggering 92 percent of Chicago police domestic violence complaints led to no disciplinary action and that 5,280 official complaints had been made since the year 2000. This, along with the fact that many instances of domestic violence go unreported, indicates that there is a significant risk of Chicago police officers being perpetrators of domestic violence. Consequently, it would be inappropriate, as well as insensitive to the needs of many survivors of domestic violence, for Roosevelt University to continue to allow police to attend events. The detrimental impact of the Chicago police on black and brown communities, as well as poor communities, has been consistently pervasive, and should also be taken into consideration. If Roosevelt University wishes to truly stand in solidarity with survivors of domestic violence, this change should also be accompanied by the incorporation of events led by appropriately trained mental health professionals, who can provide meaningful resources to students, without creating a disproportionate risk that students will feel less safe. Please sign this petition, in order to remove police from Roosevelt University's campus. In this political climate, and throughout history, police have been the perpetrators of abuse, and being around cops for many black and brown students is terrifying. We do not know if we’re going to be attacked, racially profiled, or if we might relive some type of trauma. If Roosevelt claims to be a social justice school, then it should be more than receptive to this necessary change.
