Verizon: stop blocking National Suicide Prevention Hotline calls

Verizon blocks calls to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline (800-273-8255) if your account isn't current. Rather than help you find yourself directed to Verizon financial services.
If someone is behind on their phone bill, calls to 911 still go through but calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline do not. If someone is in active suicidal crisis, 911 is often not the best to call, due to the low number of crisis trained officers and their availability, and responding officers may inflame the situation.
Phone providers should treat 1-800-273-TALK like an emergency number as well.
Poverty is a leading risk factor for suicide, so we should not punish those in poverty by blocking access to the Lifeline.
A person dies by suicide every 12 minutes in America and the bottom line is numbers like the National Suicide Prevention Hotline should be treated like an emergency number.
