I work with Honey bees in Oregon and have monumental concerns about our soil and how we practice agriculture in the United States. Protection of our soil is often overlooked in climate change conversations. Growing food using the mono-culture method is no longer, nor has been, a sustainable way of producing food. Food production using this method of growing a single crop over a vast space creates a haven for crop-destroying pests. Instead of addressing the root of this issue, we turn to pesticides as a means of control. In doing so, we are stripping the soil of all things beneficial for our health in turn depleting the nutritional value of our food, poisoning our life-sustaining pollinators, and creating hazardous and detrimental runoff. We can fix this by sowing multiple crops with proper soil development along with companion plants and food for our beneficial insects as they will aid in pest control. By using the multi-crop method we restore a balance to which we can rid the need of destructive pesticides.
We need a full Environmental Impact Statement on our current method of agriculture for food production immediately and begin a plan to return to small multi-crop farms within a 10 year time frame.
