We, the undersigned, demand that the MRAP vehicle acquired by the Michigan City P.D. be immediately returned to the Dept. of Defense.
At a time when Michigan City Schools are laying off teachers and closing schools due to budget concerns, MCPD has decided to acquire a military Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle from the Department of Defense.
Although considered a 'Donation', taxpayers are required to cover the high costs of transportation, retrofitting, insurance, training and ongoing operations of this vehicle.
We honor and support MCPD in their great efforts to fight crime and keep Michigan City safe, however, we feel this MRAP vehicle exceeds the tools required by local law enforcement, nor do we wish to financially support the use of this vehicle in our community.
In Michigan City, there is no need for a mine resistant vehicle and Michigan City is not a war zone. We, the citizens of Michigan City and LaPorte County, say that this vehicle must be immediately returned to the Department of Defense.
Issues with the use of MRAP vehicles are well documented and include:
- MRAP vehicles are prone to rollovers and not designed for use on confined city streets.
- Their 20+ ton weight cause damage to roads, bridges & private property.
- MRAP vehicles are expensive to operate, retrofit and maintain.
- MRAPs are prone to expensive maintenance issues related to axles, tires, suspension and more.
We petition that the MRAP decision be reviewed, overturned and that this military MRAP vehicle be immediately returned under the 1033 Program's Return Guidelines.
We thank you for your ongoing efforts to keep Michigan City safe and thank you for listening to the concerns of the law-abiding citizens of Michigan City and LaPorte County.
We look forward to the MRAP being returned to the Department of Defense, where it rightfully belongs. Thanks!
