In December 2020, my visually impaired peers and I were delighted to find out that Hillsborough County was going to be a part of an organization called TD Tampa Bay, which would provide transportation services across the Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco and Pinellas counties for disadvantaged and disabled riders and allow them to pay a small fee each way so they could get around! I loved the ease-of-use and accessibility of this service myself (as a visually impaired individual), so it was a definite shock when my friends and I found out that on July 1, 2021, the service would be shutting down! TD Tampa Bay received its funding from CTD’s Innovation and Service Development (ISD) Grant program, which was part of funds allocated to Florida’s Multi-Use Corridors of Regional Economic Significance (M-CORES). But as of recent legislation, Senate bills 100 and 1126 repealed that program, which included the funding for TD Tampa Bay. This is despite the fact that in June, the company had just announced that they had decided to continue the partnership for at least the next two years (and likely longer)! This is such an inconvenience to myself and those just like me because with a disability (or just being disadvantaged) it is not as easy to freely get around like the “average” person and services like these benefit my community in ways that I cannot even explain! Being disabled, my peers and I typically have to travel county-to-county for work, medical appointments, etc. which are not accessible to us with the countywide transportation services like HARTPlus and Sunshine Line, so with the emergence of this service, it was a big relief to know that I no longer had to question how I would make it to important events. I know that tomorrow may be the end of TD Tampa Bay, but I figured that if I at least tried to make a change and see if anything could be done, I would do just that. I would appreciate if the funding for this service (that was re-allocated somewhere else) could be rethought, as I would love to keep this service going and help it continue to benefit those that it was created for.
