The first phase of reopening is set to begin on Monday, May 4th, 2020 for the majority of Florida. However, under this phase so many of us still cannot return to work. There is so much to consider with many being high risk, many not having childcare, and many not feeling safe when the guidelines issued by national government have not been met by any state — a downward trajectory of Coronavirus cases in a 14 day period. Many workers are furloughed for the time being and employees returning to a normal schedule will not be an option for a few months, let alone phase one. Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Broward counties are all excluded due to a higher number of cases. Florida needs to extend the waiver of work search requirements at least until June, possibly longer. Those of us who have had to navigate the CONNECT website know what a disaster it is, and forcing Floridians to continue to claim weeks and provide work search information would complicate the situation so much more. Roughly 917,000 unique unemployment claims have been made in Florida. We are asking Florida’s leadership to extend this waiver of work search requirements for the foreseeable future to make this already difficult and strenuous time somewhat easier.
