Establish a traffic signal at the intersection of Ray Road and US-1

We the people of St. Johns County, specifically the Nease High School family and friends, are petitioning to have a traffic light installed at the dangerous intersection of US-1 and Ray Road.

Accessing the southbound lanes of US-1 involves turning left across at least three lanes of traffic with a posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour. While this is is a designated school zone with a reduced speed limit of 45 miles per hour at specified times, there is still a significant risk of accident at this intersection. During these specified times, there are several Saint Johns County Sheriff's Officers posted at this junction to assist in directing the heavy traffic. However, due to extracurricular activities at the school, many students arrive before and/or depart after the traffic officers have left the intersection.

Additionally, Ray Road sits at an obtuse angle from US-1. Because of this, when approaching the highway, it is virtually impossible to see and judge oncoming traffic.

With the Nease High School student population hovering above 2000 students ages 14-19, there are many newly licensed, inexperienced drivers. The latest accident, which involved two students of Nease occurred on November 7, 2016.

Installing a traffic light at this intersection will not only keep drivers on US-1 cautious, but it will also give the community safe passage to the highway from Ray Road. We implore you to help us keep our children alive.
