NFL Should Include Men in their Breast Cancer Awareness Promotion

October is traditionally Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The NFL did a remarkable job promoting it. However, their "pink" initiative failed to include men who are suffering from breast cancer.

While the number of male breast cancer patients is very small compared to females, men tend to suffer from further stigmas attached to having a "woman's disease". Additionally, many men do not realize that men actually can get breast cancer and tend to seek treatment later in the disease. They have worse outcomes because of this delay.

Additionally, many breast cancer centers are Women's Health facilities. I have sent men for mammograms at such places and they have been made to feel very awkward. The medical profession has yet to take a stand in including awareness for breast cancer in men and making appropriate accommodations.

Having cancer is difficult enough, but when you are forced to face down a stigma along with the disease, the burden is greatly increased.

Steve Del Gardo, founder of Protect the Pecs http://www.protectthepecs.org/  is one such patient who traveled this journey. He shares his story on the website and it is obvious being male with breast cancer makes the treatment experience much worse.

According to doctors surveyed around the world on SERMO (the largest social network exclusive to physicians), 80% who took the poll believe we need to raise awareness of male breast cancer. The doctors who responded treat an average of 6 men every year with breast cancer. Additionally, over 87% believe that professional sports organizations can be an effective tool for raising awareness. The survey respondents included over 1300 doctors in the USA, UK and Australia.

While the NFL stood up and raised awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness month, we, the undersigned, petition the NFL to step up and raise awareness for men with this disease as well. The NFL is in a unique position to reach many men (and women) to let people know this disease exists and help people seek treatment earlier. This is not about marketing or branding. We simply want to save lives.
