There are too many gruesome stories of our children dying in house fires. By initiating a campaign with the acronym S.A.F.E (Smoke Alarm For Everyone) we can move forward in implementing a smoke alarm program with major stakeholders.
These interest groups include The Jamaica Fire Brigade, Child Development Agency, Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation (formerly Ministry of Housing), Parish Councils, The ODPEM, The Police, National Housing Trust, Jamaica Public Service, NWC and other major public and private bodies.
This important campaign will be the first step in making smoke alarms and fire prevention mechanisms compulsory in ALL buildings in Jamaica. The parish council will make it mandatory for residential buildings when approving construction plans.
There will be programs by the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the Police, and other public and private agencies that will sensitize the public on how to install, prepare, activate and maintain smoke alarms in key areas of residential buildings. There will also be post practices and mitigating exercises should we fall victims to fires.
We will identify suppliers of the device and negotiate for government subsidy so it becomes available and accessible to everyone
Failure to implement mandatory fire prevention programs will continue to bring remorse to grief-stricken householders. The lack of improved fire prevention measures will also add to Jamaica's high annual death rate, particularly among our children.
Let us pull all stops in making this campaign successful. We can not continue to lose our children to fire. Let's make our homes SAFE. Smoke Alarm For Everyone!
