Christian Giadolor started this petition to rockwall independent school district and

Yesterday, we learned that in Wolfe City, TX, a hometown hero and pillar of the small town’s African-American community was shot and killed by a police officer after he intervened to resolve a domestic violence dispute and had demonstrated his innocence. The officer who killed him, Shaun Lucas, went to my high school and during my time at Rockwall Heath-High School, he was among a handful of students who would burnish confederate memorabilia and make other Black students feel unsafe and unwelcome.

This summer, we led activism in my hometown for racial justice, calling on the superintendent to move towards establishing more inclusive campuses and releasing a statement in solidarity for their black students. We gathered testimonies from black students and alum from Rockwall ISD’s high schools. I have shared the link here. It is extremely painful to read, but it speaks to how pervasive white supremacy is in the district in how little action was ever done. Some of the accounts of the survey implicate situations in which Shaun Lucas was involved. After reviewing the survey responses, the superintendent and the district never did release a statement of solidarity even when specifically asked by a coalition of black students alumni.

Today, we mourn. There’s nothing “right” Black people can do to avoid being victims to brutality and violence and the murder of Jonathan Price is proof. We also mourn because Rockwall ISD, the place we have graduated from, has done nothing to address the white supremacy that festers unchecked within its halls. And now someone has died.

Please sign this petition. This petition represents repeated attempts to move in good faith for racial reconciliation even as the district’s indecisiveness has contributed to the tragedy at hand. We are calling for Rockwall ISD to issue a statement of solidarity for its black students and reject white supremacy or for the leadership of the district to reconsider serving in their roles if they do not have the best interests of their students at heart. It will take less than 60 seconds but will be critical in our efforts to bring change to a community that is reeling and that is hurt.

Thank You!
