Cassie Funk started this petition to Rockingham County Board of Supervisors

Recently we discovered that someone was trying to zone land for a privately owned Campground to be located in Bergton off of Route 259 and Route 820 (Bergton Road). The entrance for the alleged campground is an EXTREMELY unsafe addition to Route 259. The entrance for people traveling west on 259 gives little amount of time to 18-wheelers to come to a stop after coming around the turn located near the entrance. Route 259 sees enough accidents and deaths due to accidents, we don’t need to add fuel to the fire to create more accidents.
If a truck and camper are traveling west on 259 and they need to stop before they turn left into the campground due to oncoming traffic, even a regular traffic vehicle traveling at 55+ mph would have very little reaction time to stop without rear ending the mentioned truck and camper, and just imagine if the camper had any traffic behind it stopped also waiting for the camper to turn. This entrance is a disaster waiting to happen.
Not just the entrance, but this will also bring more (irregular) traffic to 259. And, we already see a lack of county and state patrol in the area now, so the chance of the new traffic being patrolled is unlikely.

This property also sits along the river in the flood plain, making it likely that debri from the campground could possibly float to the road or neighboring houses.

This new campground is also going to bring people to Bergton who don’t know the area and can very easily end up on private land, versus National Forest. Along with that, the campground could also very easily bring struggles to people who hunt National Forest in Bergton as the campground plans to be open through parts of November (weather depending).

Bergton is a rural area, people move to Bergton (and stay in Bergton) to be ‘away’ from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and most residents want to keep it that way. We don’t want our little community turned into a little business town.
