Keri-Lyn Coleman started this petition to Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors and

Gun violence prevention is on the agenda for the Virginia General Assembly. The Rockbridge County board of supervisors should support gun violence prevention measures.

Rockbridge County residents want to ensure the safety of our schools, places of worship, and other public spaces. Validated research supports gun safety measures.  Research shows that background checks are associated with reduced rates of firearm homicide, suicide and firearm trafficking.  Extreme Risk laws, also known as "Red Flag" laws, empower loved ones or law enforcement to intervene in order to temporarily prevent someone in crisis from accessing firearms. Youth aged 18 to 20 are at increased risk for firearm violence.  Raising the age to purchase firearms to 21 to prevent minors, like the shooter in Parkland, from easily getting their hands on guns will save lives.

In 2018, there were 1,667 emergency department visits in Virginia for gun-related injuries; 72% of these unintentional injuries were among persons aged 15-34 years. Strengthening Virginia’s Child Access Prevention law will help prevent child firearm injuries and deaths.

Gun safety measures have the potential to save lives here in Rockbridge County without infringing on second amendment rights.
