Regardless of what yardstick you use to measure an artist's greatness, the Smashing Pumpkins have met that standard.  Album sales, influence, artistry, uncompromising vision, dynamic live performances and longevity are all part of the Pumpkin's impressive resume.  Through their timeless songs and groundbreaking albums, the Smashing Pumpkins sound instantly familiar yet like nothing else.

The Pumpkins have always been the outsiders.  From their early days in the Chicago scene, through the grunge movement of the 90's, they weren't easy to categorize.  They followed their own muse and paid the price for it.  The first song from Siamese Dream, "Cherub Rock", makes this struggle very clear.

"Freak out
And give in
Doesn't matter what you believe in
Stay cool
And be somebody's fool this year"

Billy Corgan led the band to dizzying heights on his own terms.  This rubbed a lot of fans and critics the wrong way...but isn't that about as Rock and Roll as it gets?  Rock and Roll isn't about conformity.  It's thumbing your nose at tradition and challenging conventions.  The Smashing Pumpkins defied expectations at every turn and took music fans on a journey that continues to this day.  Inducting the Smashing Pumpkins into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is recognition that you can create your own path to greatness instead of following the crowd.

"Believe in me as I believe in you, tonight"
