For at least the past 50 years the Dead Sea has changed its wise and level. The lake has no outlet, and the heavy inflow of freshwater is carried off solely by evaporation, which is rapid in the hot desert climate. Due to large-scale projects by Israel and Jordan to divert water from the Jordan River for irrigation and other water needs, the surface of the Dead Sea has been dropping dangerously.

The surface level of the lake is falling by more than a meter a year, it is gradually shrinking under the heat of the middle eastern sun, it is a slow-moving crisis but finding extra water to sustain the sea will be extremely challenging. As the level drops, the density and saltiness are rising and will eventually reach a point where the rate of evaporation will reach a kind of equilibrium. So it might get a lot smaller over time, shrinking at an alarming rate.
