Change Spaulding High School's Outdated Dress Code and Policy on Transgender Students
Why this petition matters
Throughout the end of the 2021 school year, students at Spaulding showed their discontent with the dress code through protest, talking with their peers, and taking every opportunity they could get their hands on to try and make the change they wished to see. After all of this student-led activism and emails containing proposed revisions were sent to the school board zero effort was returned into making the change students protested to see. Not even a response to decline their propositions.
This petition is vital because it will help to show the school board that oversees Spaulding how serious people, especially their students, are about making this change. Spaulding's school board is notorious for ignoring student and teacher voices, so every signature and word in support of change truly matters.
The current dress code at Spaulding is considered by many to be misogynistic and targets students unfairly based on their body type. Spaulding's policy on transgender students was progressive when it was approved (2016) but no longer holds any water to protect transgender students or their wellbeing. Stating that a student must "actively assert their gender at all times to be considered their gender". This line of thinking is incredibly outdated and harmful to our students.
