I had post partum psychosis and no MBU's available. It is important and proven to help recovery for mother and baby to be kept together. General psychiatric wards are no place for new mothers who are mentally ill to be distressed and confused from separation from their newborns. Also many of these new mums need medical care in relation to having given birth.

I worked in a mother and baby hostel and new mums need all the support they can get especially if they have post partum psychosis.

This aspect of mental health seems to be neglected resulting in an overall lack of facilities and almost no specific training. This has serious consequences for young mothers who suffer with puerperal psychosis. Awareness of the condition is limited.
All major psychiatric hospitals should have facilities for a mother and baby unit with appropriate staff and the option of an outreach team.

I remember the heartache my brother and his wife went through over twenty years ago at having to be parted from their very sick newborn. It’s shocking we still don’t have a unit here.
