Reverse the decision to suspend and evict the Cart Vendors from The St. Lawrence Market

The St. Lawrence Market has announced it is evicting as many as 40 craft vendors as part of its plans for re-development of the market's north building. A temporary structure is currently being built to house the Saturday Farmer's Market with less space than the old north market building. Using the excuse that there is no room for the vendors during the upcoming renovations, the market is using this opportunity to clean house.
In an e-mail sent out December 22 the market announced that it is cancelling the Market Cart Program. These artisan vendors have been given three months’ notice, until March 31, to vacate.
For the past 27 years Toronto council and the City of Toronto have said they welcomed the participation of the craft vendors to reinforce the community of the market. With this participation, the Market was designated as "the Best Market in the World" by National Geographic Magazine in 2012.
As a result many Cart Program vendors have made huge financial commitment there. Most offer one-of-a-kind products that aren't available anywhere else in Toronto. Some of the vendors operate well established and long operating full-time businesses in the lower level of the south building (far away from the construction), so this termination will leave them drastically impacted.
To kick artisans out of Market only to have their spaces sit unused and vacant is very questionable. Will the Market remain attractive for visitors and international tourist after this decision by the Market? Will it keep its designation as the Best Market in the World? The answer is ‘No’.
Help us save the artists and craft vendors!
