All throughout Broward county, there have been talks about students' mental health. As very many of us know mental health is a serious problem growing every day. Almost 40% of students in a school will have experienced some form of depression, anxiety or more by the time they leave middle school. People have started trying to think of ways to reduce stress among teens.

In my school, they started a meditation program where these ladies would come to our class and give a fifteen-minute meditation class. I am positive that for some students it worked, but for me, it was not very effective. From a very young age, kids from my generation have been taught to always keep thinking. We are constantly moving, never standing still. When the time comes for me to stop thinking about everything, to just meditate for me I physically cannot.

I believe a more effective way of reducing stress would be through animals. One, in particular, dogs. A man's best friend. Nowadays a dog can do anything from being the eyes of a blind man to being the ears of a deaf man. We have dogs everywhere we go. In hospitals, psychiatrists' offices and more.

In my life school is very stressful. I work all day then go swimming and work my body for two hours and a half. After that, I go to tutoring where I once again work my mind. That means my day is from 9:00 to 7:30 every day in the week. That may not sound like a lot but add that on to the countless responsibilities I have to fulfill such as homework, dinner and taking care of relatives, it gets to be a lot. I started to lash out at everybody in my life. I would lock myself in my room alone except for my dog. He could always make me smile. He would put his head in my lap and ask for a belly rub when he knew I was feeling overwhelmed. I would talk about everything to my dog. I think that more people would feel more comfortable talking to dogs rather than people because dogs can not talk or judge.

I strongly believe that students should be allowed to bring their own support animals to school. It would be highly beneficial to the mental state and physical state of students. With rules, it would most definitely work. Before the student could bring their dog in the school they would have to get their dog trained. The school could hire someone to make sure the dog is trained and is not a danger to other students. This would also create more job opportunities. I know for a fact in my middle school, there is no recess. With dogs, you would have to take them out to let them do their business. While you are outside you could socialize, meet new people and more.
