Why this petition matters

Started by Melissa Faherty

Australian Robert Pether is a well respected Engineer.  He started working on a project in Iraq 4 1/2 years ago as one of the leading Engineers building the Zaha Hadid designed Central Bank of Iraq HQ in Baghdad.  This project was Robert's foot in the door. His speciality is Hospitals and he was planning 3. He was also talking to officials about mega greenhouses for food security.  He took a huge risk because he wanted to make a difference. Leace a legacy.  On the 7th of April 2021 Robert & his colleague were trapped,  unlawfully arrested and imprisoned in Iraq.  They are EMPLOYEES being held as leverage and accountable in a contract dispute. They were convicted and sented to 5 years and the two salaried EMPLOYEES were also fined over 12m USD.  The entire case against them based on an unsubstantiated statement by an employee of the subcontractor who took over their roles less than 24 hours later. They were never allowed to defend themselves or present mountains of evidence proving they are 100%innocent EMPLOYEES.  In March 2022 the UN ARBITRARY DETENTION working group published an extensive report citing multiple human rights and international law violations including enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention and called for their immediate unconditional release.  This has been ignored and they remain imprisoned.  Robert has a serious skin condition & potential Melanoma and needs specialist medical treatment not available in Iraq.  We call on Iraq to honor their agreement with the United Nations and the request of the United Nations made in March 2022 and Iraq laws whereby EMPLOYEES can not be held accountable in a commercial dispute,  and release Australian Engineer Robert Pether and Egyptian Engineer Khaled Zaghloul immediately and UNCONDITIONALLY.
