Isabella rutigliano started this petition to Senator Robert Menendez and

The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. This Bill was passed in March of 2010 and this act was created with the aim to provide more Americans with access to affordable health insurance. It also aims to improve the quality of healthcare and health insurance, regulate the health insurance industry, and reduce health care spending in the US. The law has been beneficial for people who were previously uninsured, have lower-incomes, or have preexisting conditions.

You might be reading this and thinking, okay so what is the problem? Healthcare for all can be life-changing and beneficial for the individuals in our society who are underprivileged. Yes, this was a great bill that was passed but there is some grey areas to this bill. This issue is called "the glitch".

What is the glitch?

It prohibits family members from enrolling in commercial plans with lower premiums and cost-sharing because a member of the family has affordable employer coverage. Here is an example of how this is affecting the American family:

Under current rules, employer-sponsored insurance is deemed to be affordable if the cost of employee-only coverage is less than or equal to 9.66 percent of family income in 2016.  If one family member has an affordable offer of single coverage, then all family members are ineligible for tax credits to purchase Marketplace coverage, even if the cost of coverage for the whole family is greater than 9.66 percent of family income. Such families would not be subject to penalties if the dependents went without coverage, but they lack an affordable option to cover all family members. This problem is called the “family glitch.”

This petition is to help our voices be heard and stop this glitch and have affordable health care for all without any loophole. We ask that the Employee coverage eligibility criteria, be removed from the ACA. Our mission for this petition is to help American families and help get the health care they need without any stipulations.
