Meridian Labour started this petition to Robert Jenrick MP (Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government)

We call on the government to scrap the housing target system which currently demands that Lewes District Council finds space for over 15,000 homes in the next 20 years.

Peacehaven and Telscombe has accommodated five new housing developments in the last 13 years, our green spaces have been bulldozed, and our infrastructure is already at breaking point.

We have recently lost two medical practices and have only one remaining – serving 20,000 patients.

Our small shopping area is about to be sold off to allow for more residential properties, leaving us with an inadequately small shop which many residents rely on for their essentials.

Our transport links are limited, with one main route along an eroding cliff-top to access the nearest town. At peak times a simple five minute journey can take over an hour, and a traffic accident causes a complete stand-still.

There is also huge concern for our environment, with emissions damage from the increased traffic, and further erosion along our beautiful coastline.

The local infrastructure cannot cope with any more demand placed on us with this target, and our already stretched services will fail, directly impacting the well-being of our residents.

We urge the government to re-consider these targets on already over-prescribed areas, to allow the local town and district councils to make the necessary developments to our existing infrastructure, before we can even consider adding such a huge increase in population.

We ask you in the strongest possible terms to scrap the target system, and put development back in the hands of local councils and local people.
