Like many institutions, Gettysburg College has pursued an on-campus approach to the 2020-2021 school year. As has been observed around the country, the majority of such institutions have shut down within 2-3 weeks due to students partying, loose regulations, and poor enforcement. Gettysburg college is soon to face the same if things are not changed.

With a recent spike of cases, little action has been made on behalf of the administration. While Bob Iuliano and Gettysburg college has assured us that "disciplinary action" has been taken, there is far too little transparency. Frats continue to party. Students remain unaware of who poses a threat. The department of public safety (DPS) blatantly ignores large gatherings. It is not enough.

We have been told we should not be pointing fingers, that we should all "come together" as a community. How does this make anyone safer?

A coalition of students has formed and created a clear list of demands for the current semester in order to foster a safer and more effective learning environment:

- All fraternity and sorority events/activities shall be suspended until at LEAST the Spring semester. Safety of students and staff is at risk otherwise. No one shall be allowed inside such buildings beyond those who reside there.

- Anyone who is caught hosting social gatherings above 25 people will be immediately suspended from campus and all students involved will receive suspension. While this is a current rule, many believe it is not being enforced. Gatherings like such that take place in Fraternities and Sororities will consequently have the institution kicked off campus. All students will be notified of which organizations violate the rules and what has been done as a result.

- A clear description of disciplinary actions taken against students/orgs who do not abide by guidelines will be posted to a public forum so any student can reassure that proper steps are being taken to guard their safety. All students on campus will be notified of large gatherings as soon as DPS addresses the issue.

- A weekly or biweekly panel will be held in collaboration with a student panel that is open for live viewing. This will address not only student submitted questions/concerns about COVID, but student questions/concerns about DPS as well from which the college will adequately respond to complaints/concerns.

- DPS will do a more effective job at swiftly addressing and disciplining gatherings. Many students have cited that DPS moves right past large groups and fails to address the issues. We demand they do what they are paid for: keeping us safe.

We demand a transparent, responsible, and safe college campus.
