Jane West started this petition to Robert Halfon and

Eminent Scientists are responsible for the success we are having with the vaccines and getting us out of this pandemic.  They have benefited from a supportive education system in the UK, which has lead to our country being the fifth largest economy in the world!  Which is why I feel compelled to raise this petition!

Young people are under more stress than ever before, and there is a lot of medical research to back this up.  Forcing them to try and catch up on a years' education without allowing them to re-sit the year and instead, in a short space of time expecting them to do long hours of study, is going to cause more stress and put them off learning.  The whole purpose of education is to encourage and promote learning not put people off.  Who will gain from this?

I can see that the Chancellor of the Exchequer may be concerned that Child Benefit will need to be paid for an extra year in some cases, but so be it, at what cost is our children's mental health and education?  Surely a government should put its' young people's needs above finance?  The long term health of the economy rests on young people and their careers and future, which are being jeopardised by this short-sighted and unfocused thinking.  As an educationalist, a teacher and a parent, I can see the effects of this pressure and it is too great a risk for our young people to not be allowed to re-sit their current school year.  I would strongly recommend that teachers are asked to decide which pupils would benefit from doing this in September, which they should be allowed to decide without interference from Academies or Head Teachers.

I urge you to give this petition serious consideration as there is a lot at stake, not least my own children's futures and those of many other families!  Please do not leave this to the discretion of Head Teachers, please do what we elected you to do, and govern us out of this situation!
