Manyana community secures big win in their fight to stop controversial development.
ISSUED 27 May 2020: In breaking news, The Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) have secured an undertaking on behalf of Manyana Matters from developer Ozy Homes to the Federal Court that they cease all activities on the controversial Manyana Beach Estate, apart from fencing around the perimeter of their property.
This was agreed to in order to allow an independent expert to survey the site for the threatened Greater Glider over the coming days.
The undertaking that Ozy Homes has provided to the Federal Court grants Manyana Matters' experts access to the site for three days and three nights to undertake survey work to ascertain the presence of the Greater Glider on the site or the surrounding area.
“We are grateful to have been given this time for an independent expert to assess the conservation value of this land for the Greater Glider under Federal biodiversity laws."
We also express our deep gratitude to the EDO for their hard work in bringing about today's result. "We're so fortunate to have the EDO on our side. Without their expertise, we couldn't have achieved what we have today. They do the heavy lifting and rely on community funding.
The broader community has continued to support Manyana residents in their fight to save this pocket of unburnt mature forest, with people - including climate guardians - turning out in force today.
In thanking our supporters, we urge people to respect the legal process currently underway and show their support for the campaign by staying away for the time being.
We encouraged people to continuing to write to or phone representatives from local council, State and Federal Government, and to support the EDO in their valuable work by donating to www.edo.org.au/donate
