Adrian Bryant started this petition to State Representative Robert Goforth

On April 21st, 2020, Kentucky State Representative Robert Goforth of the 89th District was arrested and charged with domestic violence, terroristic threatening, and strangulation. The alleged victim had marks on her neck, forehead, and arms, and claimed that Goforth strangled her with an Ethernet cord, attempted to "hog tie" her and repeatedly threatened to kill her. Three children were present for the alleged altercation, and all three were thankfully found safe.

As of May 1st, Representative Goforth has completely ignored the allegations. He has yet to release a formal statement even acknowledging that the accusations exist. Many constituents have asked him to release a statement of some kind -- and several have asked for him to resign -- and he has refused to do so. On top of his insistence on playing ignorant to the accusations, he has blocked constituents who have asked for a statement and/or resignation from his personal Facebook account.

The people of the 89th District understand that Representative Goforth, as a citizen, has the right to remain silent. We also recognize that his court arraignment is not until June of 2020. However, we also recognize that as a Representative, Goforth has a duty to keep his constituents informed and treat them with respect. Refraining from acknowledging the accusations is a failure of his duty to keep us informed, and blocking constituents when they ask for information is an act of defiance toward his duty to treat us with respect.

These are not the first accusations levied against Goforth. During his gubernatorial campaign, Representative Goforth was accused of two incidents of sexual assault. The two incidents allegedly took place in 2008 and 2009, and the victim claimed that Goforth is "the prime example of a man who believes he is entitled. You are not entitled; not to the bodies of women who refuse you, not to the Governorship." Goforth said the allegations were "categorically false," and stated that "as a husband and father, sexual assault and violence against women sickens me, and I condemn any such acts in the strongest possible terms." The recent allegations cast a new, deeply troubling light on the previous allegations he so vehemently denied -- an action that he has not taken with the new allegations.

Goforth's refusal to meet his constituents' requests and make a statement, as well as his blocking them, is also not the first time he has shown disrespect for the population he represents. He continually attacks and argues with constituents in the comments of his Facebook page's posts when they challenge him or criticize his decisions, refusing to respect their right to hold their Representatives accountable and voice their opinion. After less than one year of serving in his seat of Representative for the 89th District, Goforth announced his campaign to run in the 2019 Republican primary for Governor against incumbent Matt Bevin. In his gubernatorial campaign announcement Goforth said Kentuckians "are tired of being ridiculed, maligned and just talked down to," and that unlike New England native Matt Bevin, Goforth was not "using the people of Kentucky to feed my ego or audition for another job." When Goforth announced his gubernatorial run less than a year after being our Representative, many of us in the 89th felt he was using us to feed his ego and audition for another job.

Robert Goforth should resign immediately. The accusations are deeply troubling, and his refusal to even acknowledge them at the request of his constituents is unacceptable. We as citizens expect character, transparency, and communication from our elected officials. Goforth has not only communicated with us, but made efforts to hide from the people he claims to serve. We expect our Representatives to embody the values we hold: the people of the 89th are deeply loving, serving, and caring people. Allegations of domestic violence, stangulation, terroristic threatening, and sexual assault do not represent the compassionate nature of the 89th District. Goforth ran as Representative and Governor under the guise of the "Christian, family values" candidate. For a candidate who claims to exemplify the religion that promises to be a light to the world, Goforth has left his people in the dark and allegedly brought darkness to the lives of two women. We of the 89th will not accept being left in the dark, we will not accept a Representative who brings darkness wherever he goes, and we will not accept being represented by an arrogant, self-entitled man who has ridiculed us, maligned us, and just talked down to us.
