Each year in the month of August, dozens of music students begin to return to Oregon State’s Community Hall to prepare for the coming Fall audition season. Community Hall is for many students the only provider of adequate practice space as nearly every apartment complex in Corvallis has restrictions on the playing of musical instruments. This year, COVID-19 has impacted music students’ ability to practice and perform comfortably without fear of eviction or damaging their hearing because of the university’s decision to close Community Hall. Oregon State’s policies are preventing musical growth in their students and prove the University’s clear stance against the arts.

As a Student Body, We Demand

  • Oregon State University provide a transparent reopening plan of Community Hall that allows all Music Students (including participating non-majors) to enter the building to practice by SEPTEMBER 1ST.
  • A safe reopening plan that outlines the University’s dedication to keeping practice rooms clean including daily sanitization by custodial professionals, student access to hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes, and strict guidelines for students on how to properly clean practice rooms before and after use.
  • Transparency in the future of performing ensembles for the 2020-21 school year.
