Push For Better Gun Control

Students, parents, teachers, and anyone who thinks it's time to take action to protect our citizens from more gun violence...

Millennials are the change we wish to see in the world. Without the push from students all across the nation this issue would get swept under the rug as it always does after a mass shooting such as the one in Florida on February 14, 2018.

I am not trying to infringe on the second amendment or the right to bear arms but there is clearly a problem with the way our government operates in the sense of gun control. It is too easy for anyone to own a gun, therefore I am demanding change. Schools and counties shouldn't be preparing students and staff for an emergency involving an active shooter, they should be working together to prevent a situation like that from ever occurring in the first place.

I understand that this topic is a very controversial subject and I don’t claim to be an expert in this area. I’m not a gun owner. I don’t go hunting. I AM, however, a concerned student and citizen! When a fire alarm went off at Peachtree Ridge HS the other day people cried, begged to stay inside, because they were afraid that we were under attack! That’s when I realized that something has to change or else we will keep hearing about more mass shootings in the news. If you’re pro gun then that’s your opinion. If you’re pro gun control that’s your opinion. I’m not trying to start any arguments I’m just voicing my opinion in hopes of bringing the attention of this issue to light.

Here is what I, as well as those who sign, are advocating for:
1. Twenty eight day holding period before allowing people to own a gun
2. Thorough background checks and MANDATORY mental health evaluation
3. Annual house checks to make sure hand guns are locked up. Penalties for owners who don’t have gun in secure location and/or not in possession.
4. Mandatory test (similar to a driving test) which will determine if an individual is responsible enough to own a gun.
5. Make a law that states you must have a gun license to own a gun.

These are just some of the ideas that could help eliminate mass shootings. I would love to discuss a compromise if you’re open to it. We can start a change in the right direction... what side will you be on?

Do your research and look into what others are doing in your community to protect innocent lives. Start a petition like this one to make our voices heard. Reach out to lawmakers in an attempt to voice your concerns and make them realize what a serious issue this is. Whether you can provide donations to gun control organizations or just spread the word, every person on our side helps. How many more lives must be lost? How many more families will have to bury their children?

Enough is enough... #neveragain
