Elliot Heller started this petition to Rob Manfred and

In the 2019 MLB All-Star game, NL Manager Dave Roberts didn't play Padres reliever Kirby Yates, who leads all NL pitchers with a 1.15 ERA. He also sat Felipe Vazquez and Sonny Gray, though both were injury replacements). AL manager Alex Cora committed the same oversight, letting John Means (2.50 ERA) sit on the bench (Cora also sat Gerrit Cole and Ryan Pressly, but they requested not to pitch except in case of emergency, since their team plays on Thursday). Notably, Means and Yates were the sole representatives of their subpar teams, whose fanbases were denied the opportunity of seeing their star gain national recognition and remembering that there is hope for the future. (Compounding matters is the fact that Means was bypassed for *three* pitchers who were only added to the game as injury replacements.)

We all remember the ugly scene that played out in Baltimore in 1993 when Cito Gaston and the AL squad were booed off the field after Gaston's inexplicable non-use of hometown pitcher Mike Mussina, in a 9-3 game.

Now, the '19 game was close and could have conceivably gone to extra innings, potentially running a risk of running out of pitchers and having to call the game like in 2002, or having the last pitcher play a defensive spot and a position player pitch (which fans tend to love, by the way). However, this could be avoided altogether by adding a rule allowing for pitchers to be brought back in in this situation.

The bottom line is that, hometown or not, every player elected to the game should have a chance to play (particularly now that the game no longer determines homefield advantage in the World Series). But the shame of an All-Star's not getting to play is no more palpable than when that All Star is his team's sole representative.

This petition is not in order to whine, but to try to bring the All-Star Game back to what it is supposed to be - a celebration of Major League Baseball and *all* of its ballclubs. Baseball is by far the American sport with the most parody, a fact of which it should be proud. That truth should be reflected at the All-Star game. Please, Mr. Manfred, make these small rules adjustments and allow that to occur.
