The Missouri Compromise

Last year my small town of Lee’s Summit Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City, had an incident, which attracted local attention after a series of NeoNazi materials were found around several of the downtown establishments.

Like many residents, I was upset and saddened by these events. I was born and raised in Lee’s Summit, and have found our history to be a mix of positives and negatives, like many towns falling below the Mason Dixon line. Over the last few years, Missouri has attracted national attention on our racial issues: Ferguson, protests at University of Missouri- Columbia, and of course the NAACP no travel ban.

Missouri is a state of generous people and kind human beings. We love God, family, and country. During the Joplin disaster, our residents came near and far to support one another. But it is time to use our history to put forth a new message of heritage not hate.

I discovered that one of the streets in my hometown is named after a known Imperial Wizard, Todd George. Todd George was a prominent businessman in our area, but he is perhaps more well-known for his intimidation tactics of a local judge who later rose to prominence as our state’s only President, Harry S Truman. The local KKK allegedly had numerous death threats against Judge Truman, who refused to be intimidated into banning Catholics and Jews from working under his administration.

Parts of our history as a state have been lost over the years, and as I drive by Todd George Road I know that many of the residents would be surprised to know this fact as I was. I have investigated the path forward to changing the name of Todd George Road to Harry Truman Road, and I need your help to do this.

There has been a lot of recent discussion regarding privacy rights and monuments across the South.  As Americans, we believe in liberty and justice for all. But as Missourians, we are still the Show- Me- State, and I believe the buck stops here on allowing public streets to be named after known Imperial Wizards.

We need to reclaim our heritage, not the hate.  After receiving several updates from the city, it has been made clear that without 100% business and citizens approval this will be put to public notice, and the application in question will cost roughly $500 to move forward prior to submitting. All additional monies raised outside of this change.org petition will be used to similar projects across the state. If you have additional information to submit regarding local history, I invite you to contact us directly.

In case you are wondering where I am gathering this information, this has been verified by numerous sources and Harry Truman experts nationally to confirm these facts. I have listed several of the biographical sources below.

The Man of Independence, 1998

Dear Harry, 1999

Truman, 1992
