I am pleased to hear that in recognition of contributions of people of BAME communities, finance minister of the UK, Rt Hon. Rishi Sunak has asked the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC) to pursue recognition of individuals from those communities. RMAC is currently considering a coin to commemorate India’s father of the nation Mr. Gandhi who, alongside other independence leaders like Mr. Jinnah and Mr. Nehru, lead the struggle for independent India.

I am very excited to hear this news and welcome this step by Rt Hon. Finance Minister, however I am a bit skeptical as well. It is often forgotten that ‘Asian’ is a large umbrella term that covers many nationalities. Hence, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight that a large part of Asian community in the UK is of Pakistani ancestry. As per the census of 2011 there are more than 1.1 million people of Pakistani ancestry living in the UK. Number of Pakistani doctors and nurses who have laid down their lives while dealing with the current pandemic is no secret at all. Also there are 15 MPs of Pakistani origin in the House of Commons currently. Mayor of London, Mr. Sadiq Khan’s father immigrated from Pakistan in 1968. Moin Ali and Adil Rashid, who were both the part of World Cup winning England team last year, also belong to the same community. These are just a few examples from current era to highlight the extensive contributions made by Pakistani community towards a flourishing British society.

As part of the initiative taken by the Rt Hon. Finance Minister, in order to pursue recognition of individuals of Pakistani community and to further strengthen the relationship between the two nations, I, on behalf of Pakistani community in the UK, urge RMAC and the chancellor of the exchequer to mint a coin to celebrate Pakistani Independence Icon Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, 1st Governor General of Pakistan, whose peaceful diplomatic efforts lead to the creation of the nation-state of Pakistan in 1947.
