May 1st is known as the National Decision Day for senior students. This date represents the deadline for seniors to pick their college and to submit their acceptance and make a deposit to attend the four-year college or university of their choice. For many seniors, this is the single biggest decision and day of their lives up to this point. This day represents a milestone in every seniors future.

This year, Riverside High School has decided to move Decision Day from May 1st, 2020 to April 22nd, 2020. This came as a shock to the majority of the senior class. May 1st is also the day of senior prom which would encourage people to come to school to kick off the day of senior festivities. This will also improve senior attendance for this day because people will want to participate in Decision Day activities. Another conflict that has been brought to our attention is the optional DECA ICDC trip, which students will only be allowed to attend if they qualify at the State Level Competition that will be held at the end of February. One more conflict that we have realized is AP Exams being later in the year would not allow Decision Day to be moved to after May 1st. Since this occasion of senior Decision Day is celebrated nationally, we feel that date shouldn’t be changed to such an earlier date due to other conflicts. We believe that a good compromise would be to move Decision Day activities to be held after the date of April 22nd and closer to the date of May 1st.

On behalf of the majority of the senior class at Riverside High School, we strongly encourage the administration of Riverside High School to reconsider the movement of a nationally celebrated occasion. We would appreciate anyone who supports this idea to kindly sign this petition and pass it along.
