Stop Single Use Plastic Straws in RIU Resorts

Within our society exotic destinations are a 5 hour flight away. It is incredible to wake up to snow and go to sleep to sand. However, the impact that all inclusive vacations have on the ecological system within these beautiful resorts is devastating.

Especially as these amazing all inclusive vacations rely on the use of single use plastic straws. Consider this: if 1 vacationer got 5 drinks per day, and there are 1000 vacationers per week, that is a minimum of 35,000 single use straws being dumped into the ocean (please forgive me if the math is bad).

Out of these 35,000 straws it it possible to understand how 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. All for the all inclusive mojitos! I appreciated that Riu has transitioned into reusable plastic cups, from what I could see, however there is still a major issue of these single use plastic straws.

As a major contributor within the all inclusive vacation getaway and resorts, the RIU Hotels & Resorts have the ability to transition into an environmentally friendly organization. This petition is not asking them to alter their strategic goals, simply amend their policies to protect these stunning areas and its wildlife.

This petition it to ask the RIU Hotels & Resorts to begin a “no straw” or "paper straw" policy across their 105 hotels across 19 countries.

The impact of single use non-compostable plastic straws is detrimental to the environment, marine, and wildlife. 500 million straws are used and discarded every day in the United States alone. That’s 175 Billion a year filtering into landfills (environment) and littering our waterways and oceans (

This is because most plastic straws are too lightweight to make it through the mechanical recycling sorter. They drop through sorting screens and mix with other materials and are too small to separate, contaminating recycling loads or getting disposed as garbage

The best way to really determine the impact of single use plastic is to take a walk up the beach on your next all inclusive vacation, just past the rows of perfectly manicured beaches and palm trees. Once you "hit the end of the road" you will see that the natural landscape is being used as a dumping ground for hotels, meaning that plastic straw is meters away from the ocean just waiting for a strong wind to blow it in the path of a turtle.

Dear Rui, I love your resorts, but please become a leader in the all inclusive vacation community and transition away from single use plastic!

If Starbucks can do it, so can the Riu!
