Why this petition matters

In his first PMQs in the House of Commons on 26th October, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described climate activists as "lunatics."

In my view, this language is not fitting for a Prime Minister and leader and is offensive and potentially harmful to those suffering with mental health issues.  The Prime Minister should apologise for using this word.

The term lunacy is antiquated and dates from times when we had little understanding or empathy with people suffering from mental health issues, whether caused by traumatic events, stress or a medical condition.

We have moved on as a society and it is common for charities, business, politicians, mental health sufferers and prominent public figures to campaign to encourage visibility, respect and understanding when it comes to mental health.  The often-quoted term "it is ok not to be ok", must extend to all walks of life and scenarios.

With regard to climate activism, the actions of many of those involved are grounded in a logical reaction to science. Nevertheless, it should also be remembered that climate anxiety has become a widely recognised mental health issue.

It is acknowledged by scientists, academics, politicians and business leaders that we cannot curb the worst effects of climate change (on our way of life, on the world's beauty and natural riches, on social and economic stability, as well as mental health) without all pulling together.  Political leaders should be harnessing the energy of those pushing hardest to help us all, not insulting them with harmful, antiquated insults.
