Dear Everyone,

I am so happy to be able to tell you all that tonight the Government announced that it will scrap hospital car park charges for NHS staff!

This is a HUGE announcement and it would not have been possible without you. The momentum you created and the and clarity in the message that you delivered have brought about this change.

I am in no doubt that our Government did not begin this week intending to cover the cost of all parking charges for NHS staff. This is a massive success, thanks to the hundreds of thousands of you who signed this petition.

I would like to pay special thanks, directly and sincerely, to The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock. I cannot overstate how refreshing it feels as a doctor to have somebody in that position actually listen and respond. Thank you.

I owe thanks also to the team at Change.org who offered kindness and support as I found myself very rapidly out of my depth.

Thank you also to Joe and the team at NHS Millions for your support and advice. This online world is somewhat alien to me.

I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the media who saw that this request was just and highlighted the petition beyond anything I ever could have imagined. There has been a lot of support but I must spotlight Roberto Perrone at the BBC and  Piers Morgan at ITV. Thank you both for everything you have done not just this week but in that past as well in highlighting this injustice and in your support of the NHS workforce.

This issue is not a COVID-19 issue. I'm asking our Government to notice that the NHS workers go above and beyond EVERY day. Efforts to save a life saved this week are not somehow exceptional or more impressive than our efforts at any other time. The government press release tonight does suggest that at some point in the future, these same staff will be asked to take a pay cut, and start paying to go to work once again. Now is not the time to take on that battle. NHS workers and politicians alike have a most urgent job to do and any further discussion at this time would not be appropriate.

For now, this is, without doubt, brilliant news for NHS staff and everyone who cares about our precious health service.

I am declaring this campaign a victory, with the hope that in the future, the Government will do what is right and find a way to make this a permanent arrangement.

I have a job to do and will go back to work tomorrow happy that things are better now than they would have been, but please can I ask you to consider other ways you can support NHS workers in this time of extraordinary crisis.

Please take a look at this other petition. It is not mine but these folk look like they know what they are talking about. Take a look and, if you agree, consider signing and sharing before you go. They are proposing very sensible measures to protect both NHS workers and the general public.

Thank you again for making this change possible. This has been a most extraordinary and humbling experience.
