Chris Benham started this petition to Rishi Sunak and

COVID-19 is a horrid virus and has caused substantial business and social disruption in the UK.

In the latest UK lockdown, car care professionals are being rounded up, in a vague and far reaching generalisation of “manual car washes”.  Subsequently they are being forced to close.  This is causing a significant and growing industry, to suffer unsustainable loses.

Detailers and Car Care Professionals rarely have the opportunity to work from home, normally work alone, follow methodical processes, often involving chemicals and cleaning methodologies that provide the lowest level of risk of viral transmission.  Somehow, cleaners of domestic properties are deemed as necessary, but Car Care Professionals, who also sterilise Taxis and other transport facilities carrying patients, key workers and those who are unable to drive, on permitted journeys, have been deemed as not essential.  There is a huge risk of both private and public transport not being sufficiently sterilised and cleaned, thus furthering the spread of COVID-19.

Due to the nature of a typical Car Care Professional’s business structure, many of these small companies and sole traders, are falling between the safety nets of grants, self employed grants and even universal credits.  Subsequently they and their families are facing exceptional financial hardship.

This petition calls upon the UK government to immediately recognise the Detailing and Car Care Professional industry as key workers who ensure cleanliness and sanitisation of both private individual and company vehicles.

This key industry is essential in reducing the transmission Covid-19 and other pathogens.
