STOP RIOC's Plan to decimate trees and wildlife in Southpoint park shorelines

Why this petition matters

Without input from the community, RIOC revealed a plan to extend Southpoint Park Shorelines by completely decimating the island’s flora and fauna. Our beautiful old trees will be chopped off for the sole purpose of paving paths to increase visitors-access! Over 320 trees (young and centennial trees) will be bulldozed down.

RIOC Plan Is Unwise:  It is an environmental disaster! It’s disastrous to trees, and all wildlife living there: native and migratory birds, mammals, marsupials, native insects and pollinators. It will deprive the residents, visitors, children and future generations from having the last place where to observe a wild beautiful piece of natural paradise with unmolested wildlife habitat that we treasure on Roosevelt Island.

Short-sighted and unnecessary, as there is already ample walking, viewing, all accessible to residents/visitors on both sides of Southpoint park.

What is a Better Option? Preserve and restore these shoreline habitats. • Educate visitors to the natural wonders of Roosevelt Island.
