Anybody that has spent any significant time on Roosevelt Island knows that what makes it so wonderful are the shared public spaces. The designers of Roosevelt Island designed it to be shared by everyone.  The building's architects created public courtyards for the specific purpose of making them open to all residents.

Now Island House and Manhattan Park are very sadly attempting to privatize large portions of their public courtyards, making the sitting areas, ball courts and playgrounds inaccessible to non-building residents. They have already erected enormous walls and fences to make them only accessible to actual building residents.  This is the antithesis of Roosevelt Island.

Roosevelt Island's unique residential neighborhood was created with the specific intent to be a community with many shared public spaces.  For over forty years, thousands of children spanning several generations have played in these spaces and playgrounds.

Please sign the petition to demand that the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation Board of Directors (who govern the Island as appointed, non-elected officials) enforce the lease condition that these spaces remain public and accessible for all.

Your comments and experiences are very welcome, especially from Island House residents as they were largely excluded from this decision making by their own board of directors and management company.
