To improve and increase the treatment Services to Transgender users of the UK National Health Service.
Transgender and Gender Dysphoria are life threatening conditions and should not be described as an illness but rather a lifelong seriously debilitating condition. And is a condition that is responsible for one of the highest suicide, Depression and mental illness rates worldwide. The current Service offered by the NHS is totally inadequate with few Gender Identity Clinics. Unacceptable wait times from first referral to initial appointment currently at a minimum of 13 months. Many Transgender men and women suffer their whole lives and only decide to begin their transition late in life. There is almost a complete ignorance and lack of training amongst General Practitioners country wide.
To address these issues and relieve long term distress and reduce the incidence of suicide and severe mental illness amongst transgender patients the following steps need to be undertaken by the NHS:
A full and complete review of transgender treatment options currently available.
Allocation of increased funding
Establishment and expansion of UK Gender Identity Clinics
Drastic shortening of wait times from referral to clinic appointment
Improved GP training and education regarding the assessment referral and treatment options for transgender patients
