My name is Jessica criss ... I am a mother a severely autistic child who is non verbal ... My sweet sweet Braxton. Braxton is 3 years old and the light in his families eyes.
I'm writing to you today in light of recent tragedy in our community , a very sweet non verbal autistic child lost his life in a retention pond behind his home (an apartment complex) ... Afterwards several parents began asking why these bodies of water did not have fencing ... Why wasn't an Amber alert issued?
Pools are required to have barriers (requirements for these barriers can be found in statute 515.29) .... We are urging our lawmakers to require barriers around other bodies of water as well ... Specifically bodies of water in residential neighborhoods , school zones , and parks where playgrounds are present ( such as Hernandos landing ... The newly built park within feet of lake Parker ). This measure would protect ALL of our children , not just those with special needs.
I can tell you that as a parent to a special needs child and after having lost a family member (child) to drowning that these measures will most certainly benefit all children in our community.
We are also urging our lawmakers to consider a new alert system that will resemble that of the Amber alert but that does NOT have the same requirements .... With this new alert system citizens would receive an alert through their phone, media, etc ... When a child with special needs goes missing the same way they recieve Amber and silver alerts ... Parents WOULD be required to show documented proof of special need ( autism , deaf child, mentally handicap etc ) as well as meeting identification standards (providing photo, description etc) .... However unlike Amber alert it would not require the child be abducted but rather missing /unable to be located.
I intend to set forth with a purpose to protect all children ... With a focus on special needs children as well. I also intend to request a meeting with our lawmakers and legislators to further discuss this need for change .
We so greatly appreciate your time and consideration in reading and/or signing this petition.
