Support A National Nutritional School Lunch Program in Canada

Unlike the G7 and many other countries, Canada does not have a national school food program. This is long overdue! A petition has already been put forth to the Minister of Health to implement an adequately-funded national cost-shared universal healthy school food program. UNICEF`s 2017 Report Card ranked Canada 37th of 41 rich countries with regards to children`s food access.

Why do we need a National School Food Program?

  • increase access to affordable, nutritious and safe food for children
  • improve children`s nutrition, long-term health, school performance, attendance and social cohesion
  • lower future healthcare costs
  • support farmers and local economies

In the 2019 Federal Budget, our government announced its intention to work with the provinces and territories towards the creation of a National School Food Program. This is a step in the right direction! But we need your support.

The pilot will start in the community of Chatham-Kent. The child poverty level in Chatham-Kent-Leamington is higher than the national average. We need to move on this now!

Please sign and share this petition to let the government know that it`s time for a bigger step to improve the nutritional health of our children.
