Hi all

You may recall back in November that there was an unsightly gate installed on the VAST Trail at the western side of the forest which I opposed. I have since learned that the gate was installed because two problems appeared to have happened near the same time; an ATV was in the Andrew's Forest which isn't allowed and it was thought the person on the ATV committed an act of vandalism with the logger's equipment. In January another act of vandalism occurred with the logger's equipment. It appears someone is against logging in the forest.

The land owners surrounding the Andrews Forest are very responsible people/organizations and provide a protected boundary to the forest. I'm sure none of those landowners are inclined to have marauding ATVs on or crossing their land and would take notice to authorities should it occur. I would expect the Forest Committee should be doing the same thing along with other non-intrusive control measures.

I do not think that a one time event of an ATV sighting justifies installing gates in the forest. In my opinion  keeping the Andrew's Forest  boundaries access free is a necessity for the free circulation of people and wildlife. I don't understand those who want to have wildlife corridors created through conservation of lands would also champion the need for more gates that inhibit wildlife.

So in November after meeting with the Andrews Forest Committee, some were sympathetic to my request not to install gates in the forest and it was agreed that the gate would be left open and it would be decided in the spring (April) if the gate would remain or not.

I have since learned that the Forest Committee intends to install gates in the forest and have started the Zoning process for a permit. The Development Review Board approval is pending a review of the gate location and type of gates to be used at their April meeting.

ACF Gate Petition

We the undersigned, petition the Andrew’s Community Forest Committee to reconsider installing gates at boundary access points in the forest.

The forest boundaries are currently a freely accessible place in the community unencumbered by access restrictions for humans and wildlife.

We believe remote access points can be better served with signage that promote relationships with neighboring communities and also notify people with intentions to enter the forest on unauthorized vehicles that it is forbidden.
