I, as a parent, feel that with everything that is going on in the news with kids being kidnapped or struck by cars that something needs to be done on the rule of kids having to be 1.5 miles or more away from their zoned school in order to ride their designated bus. For example, just last year on March 28th 2019 WACHFOX news reported at a boy that attends my son’s school was hit by a car while walking to school and received minor injuries. Another example of the dangers of walking to and from school come from another article dating back 3 years ago. WLTX reported an incident that happened in Irmo, SC  where a woman tried to lure young boys into her car walking home from school. State law requires the a student must live 1.5 miles or more away from their zoned school in order to ride the school bus. I’ve walked home with my child from school to get feel of his experience. In my opinion a majority of vehicles drive well over the speed limit, the sidewalks tend to be too close to the roads and walking so close to the road provides plenty of opportunity for kids to be snatched. I refuse to let my child walk to and from school. I feel as though that the 1.5 mile law should be changed, not just for the safety of my child but also the safety other children.
