Retaining Jefferson as a K-5 Elementary Strengthens the 2013 RSD School Bond to provide the needed South Richland Elementary School, Middle School in South/West Richland, the health and safety improvements at Fran Rish Stadium and Chief Jo Middle School, while also addressing the aging elementary schools (Sacajawea, Lewis and Clark, Marcus Whitman).
Retaining Jefferson as a K-5 Elementary supports the district’s overall strategy of returning to neighborhood schools - Jefferson is a neighborhood based school where 96% of the students walk to school.
Retaining Jefferson as a K-5 Elementary supports the neediest students in Richland – 71% of Jefferson students are eligible for Free and Reduced Meals and attend school where their parents can easily walk them to school. This makes sense. A walking proximity to school equates to better attendance, parent involvement, and healthy kids - fostering the overall success of these children.
Retaining Jefferson as a K-5 Elementary provides flexibility in district planning for the upcoming state all day kindergarten requirement - When the school board initially decided to close Jefferson, they were unaware of the all day kindergarten requirement and thus did not consider the additional classrooms (up to 22) that would be needed to house all day kindergarten.
Retaining Jefferson as a K-5 Elementary meets the needs of all children in Richland School District.
