Federation Square is public property and is the ONLY city square in Melbourne. Since its inception, it has become a hub for various activities and a meeting place for Melbournians. While it's architecture Is both loved and despised, it works as an integral space for a wide variety of activities from art gallery to performing arts stage to restaurant spaces and ACMI.
There can be no sound argument made for the responsible authority to change the relevant planning scheme to allow a multi-national company to demolish one of the square's buildings and replace it with a design that is counter to the current design and set up a retail outlet.
in essence, the Melboune City Council and the Victorian State Government are handing public land over to a multi national company, (Apple).
Both Council and Government are elected representatives of the citizens of Victoria/Melbourne and as such are custodians of public assets. They have no right to hand these assets over to foreign businesses.
