Petitioning Councillor Richard Watts, Leader Islington Council

Give Disabled children and their carers a break!

Please help us to save Lough Road Respite Centre for children with disabilities in the London Borough of Islington from closure!

The Council has decided that it plans to close this unique, purpose-built and much needed respite/short break council-run service that provides a safe haven for Disabled children to go for care, fun, life skills, socialising; whilst enabling parent carers to have a well needed break from caring.

Families were sent a letter in the second week of August (in the middle of the summer holidays, which can already be a difficult and stressful time for families in our position) with the news that Lough Road needs to be considered for closure, outlining that children's needs have changed over time and parents expectations of what they need and want from services have also changed. Families who use the service don't feel that this accurately reflects our feelings and thoughts as service users.

Islington is currently consulting families, however, the consultation period is due to be wrapped up by end of September, put to the Council's Executive Committee in November and potentially closed by December if agreed to! We are feeling that it all seems to be a foregone conclusion and it is definitely too short notice to make such an important decision on the future of Lough Road Centre, whose users are some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of our community and need a high level of care/support in order to participate in everyday life; including children with complex health needs-requiring specialist support and some with behaviour that can challenge.

We know that an excellent standard of care, support, social opportunity etc is being provided at Lough Road by wonderful, committed staff who will also lose jobs and families just do not see how a similar level of support can be provided alternatively, as the Council is suggesting.

We urge you to please help us by signing our petition; please ask Islington Council not to close this vital service down.

Many, many thanks in advance.
