On the 20th of April 2015, we saw a new manager employed for the South East Waterways region at Canal and River Trust.
Her prior job to this appointment was "Mobilising the ArcelorMittal Orbit (helter skeltjer ride) and new visitor facilities in the Podium as part of the post Games transformation of the Olympic Park", and has no previous experience of working with any waterway navigation authority.
Since April 2015, parts of the South East Waterways has increasingly fallen into bad repair and decline, through lack of maintenance.
The picture above is a typical view that gives an idea of the poor conditions and neglect on a small two and a half mile stretch between Hemel Hempstead, and Berkhampstead. Much of the south east canal system suffers the same issues. There seems to be no maintenance program to even cut the grass, let alone provide basic maintenance on locks.
The issue makes it very difficult to moor, especially for older folk who are wary of jumping into something they can't see.
This can also cause a knock on effect of people not choosing to moor, which will then see the ability to moor there further deteriorate by it silting up. It also causes people to look elsewhere for moorings. That often being 48hr moorings simply because they are the only moorings being maintained.
It makes 48hr moorings look busy, but of course, CRT have micro managed the whole thing.
It suggests that more 48hr moorings are needed, which are of course taken down from 14 day ones. In effect eliminating slowly but surely the 14 day mooring.
Should income from boating (in excess of 50 millions) be ringfenced for canal expenditure only?
