The Pet Valu store in Brampton, Kingspoint Plaza has a mess of cups with betta fish piled up behind the counter at their store. I have addressed with staff how inhumane it is to keep these sentient beings in tiny cups with no enrichments like caves, rocks and live plants. These fish live in just a few ounces of water, which is hardly enough to turn around in, much less swim in. I have seen several of them upsidedown in the cups and I am sure many are dead, but I can't get close enough to look. The sales staff are very dismissive when I address the inhumane habitat of these inquisitive creatures.

Captive betta fish are sold from breeding farms in Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia, where it’s common practice to keep them in small bottles. When it’s time to pack them for transport, fish are haphazardly dumped into baskets covered with nets and scooped up into small plastic cups. Betta fish are mistreated from when they are bred until they reach the store where they are put on display as starter pets! Betta fish require lots of expensive and thoughtful care in order to keep them well and people who buy them from behind a counter are not likely to know this. Please do not sell betta fish in cups!
