john greg started this petition to Richard Kaiser and

Most of us across the central united states have been affect by the recent flood waters in one way are the other, truth be told probably half of this flooding from the rivers overflowing their banks and levee breaks is a direct result of the river commission president Mr. Richard Kaiser and the Corp of engineers failure to do their job. Most people don't know but there are dozens of relief areas along the rivers to divert these waters and keep river levels from reaching these extreme levels. The relief levee in Memphis tn not only help to protect Memphis area but allows for runoff north of the area to drain much quicker since it doesn't have to run down river another 735 miles to hit the gulf.Had this area been opened back when the river stage hit 30 ft in Memphis a lot of the upriver flooding could have been prevented, this area is available and should be used anytime the gauge reaches 30ft and rising.Another major area is Morganza spillway which should be opened anytime the Baton Rouge gauge hits 35ft and rising and remain open until the gauge is below 35 and falling.I just read a story where a man in Daven port went for a walk one morning and the levee broke and flooded the whole town before he could get back home, if the Mississippi river levee breaks anywhere around one of these large cities such as Baton Rouge or even worst New Orleans it will cost thousands of lives and billions in damages that will take decades to recover from all because the people we trust to keep us safe are playing GOD with your life and mine because they are either incapable of doing their job are just to damn lazy. The most common one of all is the Bonnet Carrie spillway, there is no reason this should not be opened anytime the New Orleans gauge at Carrollton reaches 14ft and rising and remain open until the stage hits 14 and falling not only for the safety of residents but for the safety of the marine industry that is having a record year for incidents and barge breakaways, not to mention that 5 tugs alone sunk over the last 2 months due to extreme river currents. There is a lot of benefits to opening the spillway other than the most important which is saving lives and property such as it replenishes our ecosystem . It also deposit millions of cubic yards of sediment in the spillway that can later be used as fill in development areas, that also keeps this sediment from setting on the bottom of the river which is causing the river levels to rise more and more each year putting the entire levee system in danger of breaking and causing catastrophic flooding. Please sign my petition and demand that the Corp of Engineers and Mississippi river commission stop playing god with our lives and do their jobs and get these spillways opened now.
