We need Trigger Laws on Abortion in Illinois. Trigger Laws, in this specific scenario, are laws that would restrict abortions if the Roe v Wade decision of 1973 is overturned by the new Supreme Court. The Trigger Law that should be proposed should include the following restrictions: Criminalization of abortions at a specific period (such as illegal after a detectable heartbeat, such as Ohio did recently this year), restrictions on the circumstances in which abortions are acceptable (such as only in cases of rape, incest, and if the mother’s life may be ended by the labor or pregnancy process). There are a multitude of alternatives to abortions, including Adoption, Motherhood, Contraception, and Abstinence. Bruce Rauner recently overturned a Trigger Law on abortion in 2017 with the H.B. 40. We need to propose and enact Trigger Laws to regulate abortions, if the Roe v Wade decision is overturned. This is necessary because it is unethical to terminate the life of a fetus because of inconvenience to the mother if there is no immediate danger to the livelihood of the mother. Or if no other law is infringed upon such as incestious pregnancies, or rape cases.
