Parents for Less Testing in Florida started this petition to State Representative Richard Corcoran and

The Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) is a high stakes test that is currently being used to retain students and reward and punish teachers, schools, and districts. It has led to an increasingly narrow curriculum and even more student testing throughout the year as schools spend months gathering data to prepare for it.

The FSA is a flawed test given near the end of the year that parents cannot see and that does not deliver results until the summer. It ranks and sorts students based on a bell curve where no matter what a certain percentage of students fail even if they perform well or better than in previous years.

It tests students on developmentally inappropriate material and causes many students anxiety. Test results lead to students being unfairly labeled and sorted based on how they perform on one particular day. Test results also cause student retention and prevents students from graduating. It's not fair and we can do better.

We believe that 180 days of work reveals more about a student than one test.
Testing in Florida needs to be streamlined and the FSA high stakes testing system needs to be eliminated. Portfolios and other forms of low stake assessment can inform instruction and provide better data to teachers, parents, and districts.

We believe though that one test should not determine a child's future, a school's grade, or a teacher's evaluation.

180 days of work should matter.
